About the Author - Shirley Yuen
Shirley Yuen was born and raised in Hong Kong and moved to the United States ten years ago. She began studying Confucianism since she was in high school and has always believed in an "East meets West" approach to life.
Yuen earns her master's degree in Journalism from the University of Southern California and was the Advertising and Merchandising Manager of Revlon in Hong Kong for six years prior to taking up the challenge of becoming a parent.

While raising her children, Yuen devoted much time to researching and studying parenting and child development, and had applied her study of Confucianism and Journalism to her views on parenting by "investigating the truth." (Ge Wu Zhi Zhi) She currently works as a speaker to schools, child welfare organizations and parenting groups. Yuen has two children in college and lives in Honolulu and Los Angeles.

MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR

I have written The Three Virtues of Effective Parenting to share with parents my experience of how I have changed from an anxious, confused and fearful mom to one who is now free from anxiety, confusion and fear. Many parenting books have helped me along the way, but the most important key, as I had explained in my book, is my discovery of the power of Benevolence, Wisdom and Courage in parenting.

Confucius said, "A benevolent person is not anxious, a wise person is not confused and a courageous person is not fearful."

To apply Confucius' lesson to parenting... A benevolent parent is not anxious (or angry) because she uses her energy to learn how to love and act with compassion and understanding instead of just sitting around worrying or jumping up and down with anger... A wise parent is not confused because she is able to foresee with clarity the consequences of her parental decisions instead of just looking at and reacting to what is happening in front of her... A courageous parent is not fearful because she understands that she will need to be firm with taking the right action for the right result instead of taking the easy way out and be haunted by undesirable results in the future

Whether you are a struggling mom who is disappointed with your parenting experience or a disappointed dad who is struggling with parenting everyday, please take a moment to learn about the power of these three virtues which will lead you to not only an effective and enjoyable parenting experience, but also an effective and enjoyable life.
